BT Wales board

The BT Wales Board supports Alwen Williams and Geraint Strello who have full-time roles in the BT Wales team. The Board was established in 2002 in order to identify ways to continually improve effectiveness by BT in Wales. As a senior strategic team the Board come together at a high level as members of the BT Wales Board but otherwise work independently across BT's lines of business.

The BT Wales board is made up of people from a variety of backgrounds across the business who all bring their particular knowledge and experiences together for the benefit of BT and the wider community.

Alwen Williams, BT Director Wales heads the BT Cymru / Wales team

Alwen joined BT in January 1996 as a member of the Welsh Language Bureau in Colwyn Bay. She then spent over ten years in Cardiff initially joining the BT Wales corporate communications team and later developing her career in communications and stakeholder management. Her roles in marketing and internal communications led her to gain expertise and experience in developing and leading communication during transformational change.

Alwen has held a number of roles in HR, specialising in employee engagement and culture change as well as her most recent role developing and leading the engagement, communication and business adoption strategy and plan for BT’s HR Transformation programme in the UK and across 71 countries globally.

Alwen was appointed as BT Director Wales in September 2015. She is a co-opted member of both the Business Wales Board and the Deeside Enterprise Zone Advisory Board. In July 2016 Alwen received an Honorary Fellowship of the University of Wales Trinity Saint David

In 2014 Alwen graduated with a first class honours degree in Leadership and Management from the Open University and is currently working towards a Masters in Executive Coaching with Ashridge Business School.

Alwen grew up on the family farm in Gwytherin, a small village in Conwy, and now lives in Connah’s Quay, Flintshire. In her spare time Alwen enjoys anything that involves being active and outdoors.

Geraint Strello
Regional Manager & Welsh Language Policy Manager, BT Group

Geraint is the Welsh Language Policy Manager and plays a co-ordinating role across the various BT activities in Wales. In addition to his Welsh language role, Geraint’s emphasis is on helping people, businesses and communities in Wales harness the opportunities of communications technologies. With over 35 years’ experience in BT in various roles including engineering, customer services and contact centre management, he plays a key role in the running of the BT Wales Board and Wales Advisory Forum and in communicating with key organisations and individuals in Wales.

Outside of work, Geraint plays an active part in his local community. He sits on the Board of two social enterprises helping people with disabilities, a member of the college council for the Glynllifon site of Llandrillo Menai Group, and is involved in search and rescue operations in north Wales as a member of H M Coastguard and the search and rescue dogs association (SARDA Wales).

Dr Clive Grace (non-executive Chair)
Honorary Research Fellow, Centre for Local and Regional Governance, Cardiff University's Business School
Clive Grace is Chair of the Local Better Regulation Office, an NDPB which drives better regulation at local level across the UK. He is an Honorary Research Fellow at Cardiff Business School and a member of the WAG Health and Social Services Corporate Governance Committee. He is also the chairman of Supporta plc, an AIM listed company providing services to the public and private sectors – they are the UK's 4th largest provider of domiciliary care. He is also Chair of the RCUK Shared Services Centre Ltd, one of the largest and most complex shared services projects in the UK public sector, and a Non-Executive Director of Nominet, the steward of dotUK, one of the world's largest and most respected internet domain name registries. He does extensive pro bono work with SOLACE and CIPFA, the two premier local government professional bodies, and is an Honorary Life Member of both.

Until 2005 Clive was the Director General of the Audit Commission in Wales and Deputy Auditor-General for Wales, and prior to that he was chief executive of Torfaen County Borough Council. He is a qualified lawyer, and has a Doctorate from the University of Oxford, a master's degree from the University of California, a bachelor's degree from the University of Birmingham, and a management qualification from the Open University.

Peter Davies
Non-executive Member
Consultant, Project Development Partnership

Peter’s career background is in the field of corporate responsibility working for the Confederation of British Industry, Department of Trade & Industry and Business in the Community. Awarded the OBE in 1995 for work in establishing links between business and education under the DTI’s Enterprise Initiative, Peter was Managing Director at Business in the Community UK from 1995 to 2005. He returned home to Wales in 2005 and was appointed Commissioner for Wales and Vice Chair of the UK Sustainable Development Commission, providing independent advice to the Welsh and UK Governments. Following the closure of the UK Commission, the Welsh Government appointed him as Wales' first Sustainable Futures Commissioner in April 2011. He was also appointed to be the first independent chair of the Climate Change Commission for Wales in 2011. Peter has undertaken a range of consultancy projects since 2005 including as consultant to the Prince’s Charities in Wales and St James Ethics Centre corporate responsibility research programme in Australia. He was instrumental in the establishment of the Institute for Sustainability & Resource Effectiveness (INSPIRE) at the University of Wales Trinity St David in 2011 where he has an associate role. Peter is chairman of the Cambrian Mountains Initiative, a member of The Institute of Welsh Affairs Board and the BT Wales Advisory Board and is also a trustee of WCVA, Size of Wales and Prime Cymru.  

Dr Gaynor Lloyd-Davies
Marcomms & Business Change Director, PSBA Wales, Global Services
Gaynor is a senior ICT professional with particular expertise and experience in ICT enabled change. Gaynor works as Client Industry Executive Wales in BT’s Global Services. Prior to joining BT in 2007, Gaynor worked for Oracle Corporation for 10 years where she held a number of senior roles related to the adoption and change management wrap for global rollouts of enterprise applications and systems both customer facing and internal to Oracle. Gaynor’s academic background is organisation behaviour, management psychology with particular expertise in leadership and Behaviour Profiling.

In 2008 Gaynor worked as an ICT Sector secondee into Welsh Assembly Government, during this time she worked on a collaboration project in North Wales between WAG, Bangor University Business School and the local community. During this secondment she co-created the GIFT project ( Green Innovation and Future Technology ) which has just secured €2 million INTERREG funding. Project GIFT will be the collaboration between Bangor University’s Business and Environment Schools, Waterford Institute of Technology and University College Dublin, to establish a green innovation forum to help grow a sustainable green economy in Wales and Ireland.

Tim Bartlett 
Director Secure & Specialist Services, Technology Service & Operations
Tim is responsible for the Global Services delivery of the UK Public Services Network. This is a single logical security assured network which will reduce the cost of communication services across UK government and enable new, joined-up and shared public services for the benefit of citizens.

Tim has a degree in Technology and an MBA from Cardiff University. He has led a variety of technical delivery programmes with Retail, Wholesale and Global Services over the last 25 years in BT. He led the systems programme for the UK rollout of Broadband to the first 5 million customers. He also ran the systems programmes for 21CN and all wholesale products. More recently he has been working on the delivery of certified secure platforms for UK Government departments.

Tim has three children and lives with his partner on a mountainside above Crickhowell. In his spare time Tim likes paragliding, skiing, speed riding and surfing.

Eurig Thomas
Senior Media Relations Manager, BT Group

Eurig is responsible for BT’s media relations across Wales, south Gloucestershire and Wiltshire.

He joined BT in April 2014 having previously worked for a number of years in the Welsh Government’s Ministerial Press Office handling press activity for a wide range of portfolios including the Economy, Health & Social Services, Local Government and Culture & Sport.

With over 13 year experience in media communications he’s also worked for International Business Wales - marketing Wales as a business destination for companies in North America - and prior to that enjoyed working in the Welsh Development Agency press office.

Born and raised in Wales he studied International Politics and International History at Aberystwyth University.

In his spare time Eurig, who is a fluent Welsh speaker, enjoys following his beloved Scarlets rugby team and playing golf.

Jeremy Smitham
Commercial & Service Management Director, Business & Public Sector

Jeremy is a senior commercial and service professional with more than 15 years’ experience of the IT industry and has held senior positions in a number of commercial, service management, procurement, contract management and supply chain disciplines.

His recent roles include Vice President of BT Business Procurement, leading a team of around 50 Procurement professionals across multiple procurement categories. Leading and transforming the Procurement function with responsibility for over £1bn of supplier spend.

Presently as Director of Service and Commercial management within BT IT Services, he leads a team of over 70 professionals to deliver and exceed customer expectations in way that optimises financial performance and controls risk with responsibility for delivering business activities from bid, through to service design, contract formation and risk management, service transition, in life service and contract management and revenue assurance activities.

Born and raised in Swansea, Jeremy is a passionate Welshman and as a season ticket holder, is particularly proud of the success of his home team - Swansea City FC and a keen supporter of the Ospreys and Welsh rugby. Married with 5 children, in his spare time (of which there isn’t much) he enjoys skiing and is also secretary of the girls section of Mumbles Rangers FC. 

Ben Koscian
Programme Director Customer Services, Consumer

Ben joined BT in 2007 having spent 10 year working as a Management Consultant across various industries. Ben is responsible for leading on new product launches in the BT TV space, he also owns responsibility for the trialling of all products released in the Consumer portfolio.

Ben has a degree in Economics from Loughborough University. He has led on a number of high profile TV launches such as BT Sport, Champions League and the launch of Ultra High Definition TV with the aim of ensuring these have the best possible customer experience. He has led on the trialing of a number of products such as BT Mobile, BT’s re-entry into the Mobile Market and is about to led on the trialling of G Fast, BT ultra-fast broadband. A number of these trials are run from our Swansea office where Ben is based

Ben has two children and lives in the Mumbles. In his spare time Ben is a keen cyclist and sailor, the latter being a sport he took up upon moving to Wales. 

Jon Reynolds
Regional Business Director, Business & Public Sector 
Jon Reynolds is Regional Business Director in BT Global Services which puts him at the heart of BT’s plan for transformational next generation broadband services. He was appointed as BT Regional Director for the South West in October 2009. Jon and his team have led the successful establishment of a partnership to deliver next generation broadband in Cornwall as part of a £132M project involving Cornwall Council, SWRDA and BT.

Jon has worked for BT for 21 years in senior roles across the organisation and is based in Bristol. He is a member of the CBI Regional Council in the South West.

Jon lives in North East Somerset and has been a governor of a local secondary school for five years. He is also a Fellow of the Institute of Direct Marketing.

Phil Evans 
Client Services Director UK Banking, Global Services 
Phil has over 20 years’ experience in major contract delivery and service management with particular expertise in the Financial Services Sector.
He is currently the BT Client Services Director for UK Banking and responsible for the end to end delivery and in life service management across all the Global Banking contracts in the UK. In addition he has recently taken ownership of the Zurich insurance Group contract for the foreseeable future.

He manages a team of Client Directors who own Service and Delivery to all the UK Banking organisations such as Lloyds Banking Group, Nationwide Building Society, Royal Bank of Scotland, Barclays, Visa, Clydesdale Bank, Standard Life and many more.

Has manages a budget in excess of £40 million in professional services contributing to revenues in excess of £400 million per annum.

In addition to his knowledge of the financial sector Phil was also part of the BT bid and delivery team who won the N3 contract. He also led what was then a pioneering programme to stimulate broadband penetration in rural areas working with Cornwall County Council and the South West RDA to support small businesses in making better use of high speed connectivity.. That programme kicked off a number of its kind and that specifically included Wales.

He has a wide range of contacts at CIO, Heads of Service Delivery and Heads of Programme level with external customers and a broad network of internal contacts at many levels.

Phil was a semi-professional footballer for 20 years and in his early playing career was on Swansea City’s books. He represented Wales at non-league level on a number of occasions and then went into coaching after his playing days were over. He is currently a race fan and enjoys the thrill of taking his Caterham on race days around the tracks of the UK

Sandra Sexton 
Senior Apprenticeship Development Manager, BT Group HR
Responsible for the BT apprenticeship programme delivery and quality assurance across Wales and the UK, assisting in the attraction of talent and the development of BT’s apprentices across all of BT’s lines of business. Prior to joining BT in 1998 where she managed the BT Business call centre as sales and customer service manager, Sandra worked for Admiral Insurance Group, Cardiff for 6 years where she held a number of management roles across the call centre leading on inbound and outbound sales and customer service.

Born and educated in Wales, Sandra has herself completed a management apprenticeship since joining BT. Sandra has 3 children and lives in Cardiff.

Gemma Cheek-Jones
Apprentice Development Coach, BT Group
Gemma joined BT in 2006 as a Switch Transmission engineer in BTSO, and currently sits within BT Group as an Apprentice development coach, she is a qualified assessor and interval verifier and is responsible for coaching apprentices through their academic side of their apprenticeship, assessing NVQ and complying with Welsh government policies.

She holds a BA Hons degree in business management and would love to go onto completing her masters. She is currently on a ILM first line management course and learning to speak Welsh.

Gemma enjoys being active outside of work and doing charity work and has completed a duathlon for charity, and completing the Cardiff half marathon also for charity this year.

Allison McCarthy
Head of Consumer Operations, EE
Allison has 16 years’ experience in the telecommunications industry and is responsible for the Welsh site for the EE estate based in Merthyr Tydfil. She joined the company 16 years ago as an agent and her claim to fame is taking the first call to come into the centre that she now heads up which clearly shows a passion the company has for internal growth and development. Allison is responsible for the consumer sector of the company – specifically the technical front line and second line support – supporting her passion for giving something back to the community by developing people and offering opportunities to further their technical expertise and education through work based qualifications. Born in Merthyr she is passionate about giving something back to her community and regularly attends local schools and colleges to support the local area.

EE Merthyr has a great success with their apprentice community – winning the Macro Employer of the Year award 2015 which Allison plays an important part in supporting and developing this community and ensuring the appropriate opportunities are provided to them

Allison is currently working towards a Masters qualification in HR in Bristol University. In her spare time her passion is charity fundraising incorporating her love of climbing mountains. To date she has raised over £100,000 for a variety of different charities. A huge animal lover, her dogs Theo & Freddie and lovely 17year old daughter Meg are constant companions on the mountain
